Board Spotlight

Shannon A. Brown, Senior Vice President & Chief HR/Diversity Officer at FedEx Express

  1. How long have you served on the board at Memphis in May? And what attracted you to serve on the board?
I joined the board in 2016. Memphis in May is one of the best international festivals in the world. I am impressed with the economic, cultural, educational, celebratory, and overall global impact of MIM. I travel extensively around the globe and I’m always delighted to hear people in faraway places talking about the MIM experience. As a native Memphian, I am proud of all that MIM offers.
  2. What do you do when you aren’t participating as a board member at Memphis in May?
I enjoy spending time with my family. Additionally, working for the world’s largest express transportation company keeps me on the move. I also feel that it’s important to effectively connect with our communities around the globe. I am therefore involved with several outreach programs designed to help enhance the quality of life for people in our diverse communities. I also serve as a mentor to several young people who are seeking guidance on careers and what it takes to live a fulfilling life.
  3. What is your favorite Memphis in May memory?
The overall atmosphere that Memphis in May creates each year is an unforgettable memory in and of itself. MIM embraces the world and brings it to Memphis. I enjoy seeing the huge crowds of people who travel from near and far to be a part of this celebration.
  4. What do you love most about Memphis, in general?
I believe that Memphis is on the cutting edge of becoming one of the top cities in the world, and this is exciting.  Memphis people don’t give up. Like any other city, we have challenges, but our people are our greatest asset. Our city is comprised of diverse bridge-builders, pathfinders, trailblazers, and visionary leaders of various ages and backgrounds who can deliver world-class results.
  5. What are you passionate about?
The education of children. Ensuring that children receive the best education possible is the most important investment we can make.
  6. What is your favorite food?
    Memphis barbecue.
  7. What is your favorite band, song or book?
I’m a huge Charlie Wilson fan. Relative to books, my favorites are “1776” by David McCullough and “You Can Have it All” by Arnold M. Patent.
  8. Favorite place to visit/vacation?
