RIVERSIDE DRIVE TRAFFIC DETOURS IN PREPARATION FOR 2017 MEMPHIS IN MAY CELEBRATION

The 41st annual Memphis in May International Festival begins on May 5, 2017 in Tom Lee Park.  As staff, volunteers, and vendors have begun preparing the park, motorists prepare for the annual detour around the closure from Union Ave. to Georgia Ave.  Historically, Memphis in May minimizes traffic disruption by requesting only partial closures of Riverside Drive, and this year is no exception.

“As a partner with the city and citizens of Memphis, we make every effort to reduce the impact our Festival has on Riverside Drive traffic,” says James L. Holt, President & CEO of Memphis in May. “With the safety of our workers and festival-goers in mind, the road closures we require are both as brief and as thorough as needed to ensure public safety.”

Each year, Memphis in May schedules work so that Riverside Drive is partially open for 20 days during the festival cycle and limits complete street closure of this portion to no more than 15 days.  These closures of Riverside Drive pertain only to Memphis in May International Festival events in Tom Lee Park and are not related to the “pop-up park” that has closed Riverside Drive for the month of May from Union Ave. to Bass Pro Drive.

During the Festival event days, Beale Street from Wagner Place to Front Street and Wagner Place from Beale Street to Linden Avenue will close for the safety of pedestrians and visitors to the events.

Additional short term street closures for the inaugural Great American River Run on May 28th will be announced in May.
