Memphis in May International Festival will host their annual World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest Judging Seminar on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Holiday Inn Select Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee.

This seminar provides the only opportunity for barbecue enthusiasts to receive training and become qualified to judge at the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, which has been extended, for the first time in the contest’s history, to a four-day event to be held on May 17-20, 2017 in Tom Lee Park, in Memphis, Tenn.

“Every year we crown the World Champion of barbecue. That is a big responsibility and it takes real judges who know pork. This annual seminar is the only opportunity for individuals to become trained to judge at the legendary Memphis in May event in 2017” said James L. Holt, president and CEO of Memphis in May.

Topics to be covered at the barbecue judging seminar include: Memphis in May judging process and rules; the official meat categories; the scoring process; and blind, on-site, and final judging. Participants will sample barbecue from a competition barbecue team during simulated judging exercises.

Each year over 250 competition teams from across the country and around the world travel to Memphis to compete for the title of World Champion Barbecue Cooking Team. Last year we crowned renowned pitmaster, Myron Mixon of Jack’s Old South for a record tying fourth win. The stakes will be super high in 2017 for both of our four-time winners, Jack’s Old South and Big Bob Gibson, and for all competitors hoping to join them on our wall of champions.

The Championship Barbecue Judging Seminar is limited to the first 100 registrants, first come first served. All instruction materials and lunch are provided. Participants are encouraged to register now, as the seminar sells out each year. Registration is $85.00 per person and applications are available at memphisinmay.org/judge-barbecue. Registration closes Monday, November 14, 2016.
