Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ben Harper wanted to rock out for his 1999 album Burn to Shine, so he pulled together the musicians that would be the Innocent Criminals as his supporting band. The album boosted Harper’s visibility (he’s won three Grammy Awards since) and he brought the band back for 2007’s Lifeline, which debuted at No. 9 in the U.S. and was followed with a tour. Last year, Harper again got the band together for the album Call It What It Is, his 13th studio LP. Entertainment Weekly praised the album for going back to Harper’s roots and calls it “a welcome homecoming” and reaffirms that he remains a “master of many musical styles.”
