Memphian Andrew Van Wyngarden and fellow freshman art student Ben Goldwasser formed MGMT in 2002 at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. In 2005, they released an electro-rock EP, Time to Pretend, followed by their first full-length album Oracular Spectacular in 2007, which was a critical and commercial hit. The album sold more than 500,000 copies in the U.S., going platinum in Australia, the U.K. and Ireland. In 2010, MGMT’s sophomore album, Congratulations, went in a different direction but debuted at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard chart. MGMT has played major festivals around the world and opened for Paul McCartney, Radiohead, M.I.A. and Beck. The band was nominated for the 2010 Grammy Award for Best New Artist and their track "Kids" was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. MGMT’s self-titled album was released in 2013 and, according to NME, is “undoubtedly the most mind-altering, psychedelic music MGMT have yet made.”
