Memphis
in May International Festival and our green partner International Paper are
working to diminish our environmental impact on Tom Lee Park and the Memphis area by
responsible environmental action. Our
goals are to increase our patron’s and vendor’s participation in recycling, to
offer enhanced green options for our guests and participants and to be a leader
in environmental responsibility for festivals and events around the Mid-South.
When you visit or participate in Memphis in May 2010, you’ll be able to assist
in our efforts by:
Recycling
Throughout Tom Lee Park you’ll notice our visible Recycling
Stations. Our Green Team volunteers will
be available at those facilities to encourage recycling of plastic and aluminum
and disposal of food waste for composting.
Our vendors will use only recyclable or biodegradable food
service products and our beer sellers will capture recyclables and return to
collection sites.
We will also recycle cardboard and cooking oil with the
assistance of our food and beverage vendors and our merchandise vendors.
During the World championship Barbecue Cooking Contest,
we’re not only asking patrons to assist, but we’re encouraging our teams to be
green. Each team will designate an
“Eco-Agent” to be responsible for their team’s compliance and maintenance of
waste and recyclables. Our “Trailer
Trashers” will aid teams by collecting recyclables and biodegradable waste
during peak demand. And our collection
compounds will be tucked nearby with appropriate staffing to assist teams in
proper disposal of their and recyclable waste.
Reusing
Memphis
in May has sourced merchandise vendors and suppliers who offer eco-friendly
products to support our initiative.
Additionally, we are banning the use of plastic bags for purchases
within the park. Our Memphis in May merchandise stores will offer
more green items for the public.
Reducing
We encourage all staff, volunteers and visitors to reduce
our carbon footprint by ride sharing and utilizing the MATA trolley line to
arrive at the park. Further, our Green
Team Volunteers will be visible at each event offering green reminders.
Our partnerships with Recycle Memphis, Project Green Fork,
Clean Memphis, Memphis City Beautiful and the City of Memphis will help get our green message to
the Memphis
area.
Restoring
When May is over, we work with the Riverfront Development
Corporation to remove all signs of our use of the park. Our crews will work to clean and repair Tom
Lee Park for future enjoyment and our damage assessment charges paid to the
Riverfront Development Corporation will serve to quickly restore the event site
to its beautiful and natural state.
At Memphis
in May, we have a dream and it is green!
Together with our program partner, International Paper we can make our
greening a part of the great benefits of Memphis
in May International Festival.
