FROMMER'S LISTS MEMPHIS AMONG 2019 TOP TRAVEL DESTINATIONS
MIMIF receives top billing in Frommer’s feature on Memphis as one of 19 locales selected as a 2019 Top Travel Destination, with only 5 locations in the U.S. listed. Sharing the global honor with destinations such as Singapore, Zimbabwe, Bulgaria and Egypt, Frommer’s listed Memphis in May events as the prime time to visit, specifically because of our Bicentennial Salute to our hometown this year. Click here to see who else shares the honor with us!

JUDGES SEMINAR RECAP
Over 90 new judges were certified during our annual Judges Seminar on Saturday, November 10. The day-long course takes potential judges through all they need to know in order to participate effectively at the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. The seminar is held once a year and only those who complete the class can judge during the event in May. We received media coverage of the Seminar this year from The Daily Memphian and The Commercial Appeal.

GARR POST-RACE PARTY
Speaking of the Great American River Run, the post-race party is the best in the city. Held near the finish line of the race in Tom Lee Park, the 2018 post-race party had quite the selection of bites and beer. As runners enjoyed live music and the beautiful riverfront, they had their pick of mouth-watering local food options, including:
- 1,500 donuts from West Memphis Donuts
- 1,680 slices from Lost Pizza
- 1,500 Gus's chicken tenders
- 1,600 granola bars from Sprouts
- 850 Bardog sliders
- 1,500 assorted cupcakes
Enough beer to make every participant forget the pain of 13.1 miles
Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 25th to join the City of Memphis in Tom Lee Park for a multi-stage event celebrating what makes our hometown great! You’ll enjoy a dramatic light show, and may just see a World Record set! Don’t miss it!
EDUCATION: WORLD CARGO CRATE
More than 22,000 Memphis students will enjoy the World Cargo Crate in their classrooms this year. It’s a hands-on learning experience featuring artifacts that represent the history and culture of the City of Memphis, our subject of this year’s Honored Salute. All slots for 2019 are booked, but you can be put on a waiting list by emailing education [at] memphisinmay [dot] org
SPONSOR PROFILE: CATTLEMEN'S BBQ
For more than 20 years, Cattlemen's presence at the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest has left an impact on attendees and teams alike. It's hard to miss the GIANT inflatable bottles of sauce flanking both sides of the Cattlemen's Main Stage. They also make some of their signature sauce available to the teams during the competition!
"For decades, the world's best BBQ teams have turned to Cattlemen's BBQ sauce for the performance and flavor they need to reach World Champion status," said Matt McDavid, Cattlemen's Brand Manager. "Memphis in May has allowed us the opportunity to build deeper connections with the community, customers, and participants through sponsorship of this event."
VENDOR SPOTLIGHT: SPECIAL EVENT SERVICE & RENTAL
The 2019 festival marks the 10th year that Special Event Service & Rental has provided electrical distribution and air conditioning for Memphis in May. For 40 straight days, SESR staffs a six-to-ten person crew in Tom Lee Park to ensure the operations run smoothly. SESR works around the clock and side-by-side with the Memphis in May Operations team, developing a strong comradery by the time the month concludes.
"[There's a] satisfaction that comes at the end of May after weeks of challenging, hard work to create the city’s most iconic/signature event," said Jason Trowbridge, Special Event Service & Rental's Director of Operations. "It’s a punishing, high-pressured schedule and nothing is quite like the rush when it’s over. We are a Memphis-based organization and proud to help produce the city’s official festival."
BOARD PROFILE: DOW MCVEAN
A lifelong Memphian, Dow McVean is Principal of McVean Trading and Investments and joined the Memphis in May board in 2018. Having grown up attending the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest every year with McVean Trading’s competitive team and now being in the meat trading business, not surprisingly, McVean says the WCBCC is his favorite part of the month-long Festival. The affinity for our civic festival runs in the family, as his three children are already looking forward to 2019’s Beale Street Music Festival lineup announcement. While he’s looking forward to celebrating the culture and history of Memphis next year, Dow would like to one day see Germany selected again as the subject of our salute since he and his wife studied there for a semester.
