Volunteer Expo This Month
Over 900 volunteers come together each year to produce our city's biggest events of the year. Find out how you can be a part of this at the Volunteer Expo. Bring your friends and family along to learn more about our 16 different committees and meet other volunteers. The Expo is set for Thursday, February 21 from 6 pm-8 pm at Beale Street Landing. It's impossible to imagine the success of Memphis in May without these friends, so take advantage of this terrific opportunity and help us throw the city's biggest party this May!
Tom Lee Park Redesign
Today Memphis River Parks Partnership (MRPP) unveiled the new design for Tom Lee Park at Beale Street Landing. Memphis in May has been involved with MRPP and Studio Gang over the last two years to inform them of the festival requirements in Tom Lee Park so those needs may be included in the park redesign. The Tom Lee Park Engagement Center at Beale Street Landing opens to the public this Saturday, Feb. 2, so stop by and see for yourself what’s in store for the Park and Memphis in May in the future.
#BSMF19 Lineup Coming Soon
The 2019 Beale Street Music Festival lineup release is set for Wednesday, February 13. The anticipation and excitement continues to build for what we expect to be one of the biggest lineups ever. #BSMF19 is less than 100 days away, don't forget to lock in your three-day pass for $125 before the limited quantities in that price range are gone!
If you haven't been around the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest in the last few years, you'll be delighted to hear of some additional experiences. BBQ Alley presented by Big Green Egg, a limited-capacity area serving up barbecue and sides, and Kingsford Tour of Champions, an opportunity to judge barbecue from several teams, have been a huge hit that allow patrons to taste the barbecue they're smelling around the park. Tickets are on sale later this month! Learn more.
Great American River Run Medals
The Half Marathon and 5K finsher's medals for the 2019 Great American River Run presented by AutoZone were unveiled late last month. With colors that pop and a design that stuns, every runner who finishes will receive some hardware. Prices increase the longer you wait, sign up for the half ($65) or 5K ($30) now!
Visions of Memphis Voting Open!
As part of this year's Salute to Memphis, we hosted an open call for all local artists to submit an original work based on their interpretation of the city. The submission period has closed, but now it's up to the public to help decide which artwork will become the 2019 Fine Arts Poster. View the submissions and select your favorite by clicking here. Your vote could put a local “undiscovered” artist’s work in front of the world!
Celebrate Memphis: 200 Years and a New Century of Soul
To salute our city’s Bicentennial and the start of a new century of soul this year, Memphis in May will introduce a new event, “Celebrate Memphis,” on May 25th —it’s a party 200 years in the making! Tom Lee Park will be filled with activities and entertainment for every Memphian: from a spectacular airshow and paratrooper stunt team, to mouth-watering menus from your favorite local food trucks, to local artists performing on multiple stages, to a Corn Hole Tournament and fun games and experiences for the kids. Tour the Global Community to learn more about the various cultures represented in Memphis, or peruse the Shop901 area for local crafts, and join your friends and neighbors as we try to set the record for the World’s Longest Picnic Table! The day of celebration will end with the area’s largest fireworks display set to a Memphis soundtrack and coordinated with a drone show and our own Mighty Lights show! Don’t miss it, because a party like this only happens every 200 years!
Board Profile: Shannon Brown
A Memphis native, Shannon Brown’s favorite Memphis in May event is the Beale Street Music Festival because “music is such a vital part of our city’s worldwide reputation, and the Festival showcases many of the great performers of our time.” With that in mind and because of the key blues component at BSMF, he would love to see blues legend Bobby Rush perform as a “salute to his legacy and a treat to blues lovers around the world.” When Memphis in May returns to saluting the history and culture of another country following this year’s salute to Memphis, Mr. Brown hopes one day Singapore is selected because of its high global ranking in economy, education, healthcare, and quality of life. Looking to the future of Memphis in May, Brown says he wants to see the Festival build on its recent successes and look for the opportunities to grow Beale Street Music Festival even more!
Sponsor Spotlight: Kroger
Kroger is returning as the Official Team Retailer for the 2019 World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest!
“As America’s largest grocer, Kroger is proud to partner again with the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest with Memphis in May,” said Randall Melton, Vice President, Merchandising, Kroger Delta Division. “This is another opportunity for Kroger to solidify ourselves as a food authority by providing our quality products and service to the teams all while celebrating Memphis.”
Children's Poster Competition
Did you know that every year Memphis in May hosts a children's poster competition sponsored by International Paper and the winning art is commissioned and sold to the public? It's been amazing to see what our Memphis/Shelby County students have drawn to depict each year’s honored country, and we’re excited to see how Memphis will be illustrated this year. If your child or grandchild is eligible, encourage them to enter today. Learn more.
